ABOUT US:
Astro Mechanica is reinventing supersonic aircraft by innovating on engine, airframe, and systems that industry hasn’t in over 50 years. Our electric combined cycle engine, Duality, is the world’s first jet engine that's engineered for efficiency from takeoff to Mach 3+. This new propulsion technology enables the delivery of people and payloads anywhere on Earth in just hours, laying the foundation for a new operational paradigm: an affordable point-to-point global travel network that will make on-demand, high-speed air transport the new standard of travel.
WHO WE ARE:
We're a team of hardcore engineers who live and breathe aerospace. We’re generalists who each have subject matter expertise and operate in a flat organizational structure. We move fast and build world-changing technology in a pragmatic and competent workplace culture.
WHO YOU ARE:
Astro Mechanica is seeking a Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer to join our growing team. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer with a passion for owning complex systems from the ground up. You thrive in fast-paced environments, enjoy solving complex integration challenges, and are passionate about building high-performance, elegant aerospace systems. Your expertise will be critical in developing the mechanical or fluid systems that enable our advanced aircraft to push the boundaries of flight. In this role, you will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of one or more vehicle subsystems, driving innovation from initial concept through flight testing and beyond. You will spearhead the end-to-end development of critical vehicle systems, potentially including flight controls, landing gear, fuel or hydraulics. Your leadership will be pivotal in mentoring other engineers and ensuring the seamless integration of resilient and scalable mechanical systems.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Support the design lifecycle of mechanical systems, from concept development through detailed design, analysis, fabrication, and test.
Conduct trade studies and assist in system architecture evaluations to optimize performance, weight, and reliability.
Design and integrate mechanical and fluid systems under the guidance of senior engineers, ensuring functionality and manufacturability.
Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to support component selection, development, and integration.
Perform system analyses and contribute to performance modeling and safety assessments.
Assist in developing test plans and participate in validation and verification activities, including component and system-level testing.
Work closely with cross-functional teams including structures, propulsion, avionics, and manufacturing to ensure cohesive system integration.
Provide hands-on support during hardware prototyping, vehicle build, and test campaigns.
Engage in technical reviews and contribute to documentation and reporting efforts.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
2–5 years of experience in mechanical systems design and integration (internships and student projects count).
Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (such as NX, CATIA V5, or SolidWorks) for designing mechanical parts and assemblies.
Strong foundation in engineering principles and analytical methods.
Hands-on experience with prototyping, mechanical assembly, or testing of hardware.
Effective communication and collaboration skills across engineering disciplines.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to evolving project needs.
Willingness to travel to test sites and support field operations as needed.
PERKS AND BENEFITS:
Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, including Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
401(k) program and transparent stock option plan
Self-managed and flexible time-off policy, including PTO, paid holidays, and sick time
Flexible work environment
