About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.
Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.
We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.
Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.
If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.
Join the power movement as Senior Electrical Engineer
Senior Electrical Engineer reports to the Director of Power Systems in the SPARC team at CFS. You will lead and coordinate system and component level electrical engineering with compliance to industrial standards and safety aspects while meeting specifications, project timelines within budget allocated

What you'll do:

  • Lead complex technical design activities to design, build and deliver Medium Voltage & Low Voltage electrical systems design for fusion power
  • Develop detailed electrical systems design, including MV/LV distribution, power interfaces, switchgear, protection coordination (relays, circuit breaker and fuse selection), emergency backup power and utility connections
  • Develop electrical drawings (one-line and three-line diagrams), control schematics, power cable sizing and cable schedules
  • Perform complex engineering calculations such as – load flow, short circuit, motor starting (ETAP), Arc flash analysis (ETAP), protective relay settings and circuit breaker / fuse coordination with time-current curves
  • Develop specifications and designs for control cabling, conduit and/or raceway and auxiliary electrical systems (instrumentation & control networks, lighting, fire and protection systems)
  • Develop electrical specifications, Bills of Materials (BOM), equipment and load lists for procurement and construction
  • Single point of contact for all coordination activities between the electrical engineering team and the EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction)
  • Apply industry compliance and safety standards (NEC, UL, CSA, IEC) for engineering deliverables

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or) Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License with ability to stamp drawings
  • Proven industrial design and project lead experience in large scale conventional power utility design

Bonus points for:

  • Experience in design of Power Generation Stations and/ or High Voltage substations
  • Design, installation and maintenance of heat tracing systems that use electricity to keep pipes and vessels warm
  • Experience in designing lightning protection systems using modeling and simulation to inform safe and code compliant design for buildings
  • Experience in Grounding design and simulations for ground conductor sizing, testing for ground resistance and addressing gaps in design
  • Resource planning – budget, schedule, and risk mitigation
  • Electrical field installation and commissioning experience with energization and troubleshooting of systems
  • Experience in problem solving, root cause analysis and field containment actions
  • Experience with scaling up independent systems to a larger system to meet higher power requirements
  • Experience with specifying test equipment, identifying vendors and work with procurement on purchase and delivery
