About the role
We are seeking a motivated Analytical Chemist, R&D with experience in water quality analysis and treatment, particularly focusing on high salinity brine samples. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with ICP-OES or ICP-MS techniques in a laboratory setting, and an interest in water treatment research and development. This is a full-time position based in Oakland, California. This person may travel for approximately three months per year to commission and operate laboratories in lithium extraction plants across the US, South America, and Europe.
Responsibilities
- Perform analytical chemistry techniques, primarily ICP-OES, for water quality analysis of brine samples
- Assist in the development and validation of analytical methods for complex matrices
- Conduct water quality assessments and contribute to ensuring compliance with ISO and EPA regulatory standards
- Support research and development initiatives for water treatment processes, particularly in brine pretreatment for ion exchange reactors
- Operate and maintain analytical instruments, including ICP-OES
- Follow quality control and quality assurance protocols for the laboratory
- Analyze and interpret water quality data, identifying trends and patterns
- Collaborate with team members across multiple disciplines to develop creative solutions
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field
- 2-4 years of experience in analytical chemistry, with a focus on ICP-OES and/or ICP-MS techniques
- Experience in water quality analysis, preferably including work with brine solutions
- Deep understanding of inorganic chemistry
- Familiarity with water treatment processes and technologies
- Understanding of regulatory standards and compliance requirements for water quality analysis
- Experience with method development and validation
- Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Good communication and teamwork abilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with ion exchange technologies or water treatment processes
- Familiarity with environmental permitting and water quality regulations
- Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
