People Operations Lead

Mill

Mill

People & HR, Operations
San Bruno, CA, USA
USD 100k-140k / year + Equity
Posted on Apr 22, 2025

Mill is all about answering a simple question: how can we prevent waste? Less waste can save time, money, energy, maybe even our planet. And there’s no better place to start than food. Food waste is one of the most solvable climate problems facing us today. Plus, our trash really stinks. It’s gross, heavy, and our least favorite chore. At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.

About the Role

As our People Operations Lead, you’ll play a key role in shaping and scaling the infrastructure that keeps our team running smoothly. From managing critical systems like benefits to streamlining HR systems and processes, you’ll be the go-to expert for our teams on the smooth People Ops—and a critical partner in ensuring an exceptional employee experience as we scale.

This is a hands-on role for someone who loves understanding and improving systems, thrives in fast-paced environments, loves diving into the data and cares deeply about the people behind the processes.

What You’ll Do

People Operations Strategy & Support

  • Manage employee benefits administration, including enrollments, renewals, and vendor relationships, including leading annual open enrollment and support employee questions around benefits and compensation
  • Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and reporting requirements
  • Maintain and improve our HRIS and look for innovations or efficiencies we can achieve.
  • Innovate on and scale, people-friendly systems for onboarding, offboarding, and performance management
  • Manage employee data and documentation, ensuring accuracy, privacy, and compliance
  • Develop and document HR policies and procedures that reflect our culture and values
  • Partner with Finance and Legal teams to support audits, reporting, and compliance efforts
  • Identify and implement tools and processes that streamline the employee lifecycle and enhance the overall employee experience
  • Support org-wide People initiatives including performance cycles, internal communications, and employee engagement efforts / cultural events. Help us maintain a high-touch employee experience even as we scale

What We’re Looking For

  • 4–6 years of experience in People Operations or HR
  • Experience people systems and benefits, preferably in a multi-state or startup environment
  • Familiarity with different HR systems (e.g., Gusto, Rippling, Justworks etc)
  • Strong understanding of HR compliance and employment regulations
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, and excellent with follow-through
  • Empathy-driven with a people-first mindset and strong communication skills
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and excited to build systems from the ground up
  • Inspired by Mill’s mission to keep food out of landfills

Nice to Have
Familiarity with equity administration and compensation planning

The estimated base salary range for this position is $100k to $140k. As a growth role, compensation would also include an incentive component, benefits and equity grant. A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs. At Mill, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.
