Analytical Chemist - Process and Materials
Renaissance Fusion
Analytical Chemist – Process and Materials
Renaissance Fusion is a startup aiming to develop and commercialize a nuclear fusion reactor with net electricity production by the 2030s. To achieve this, we rely on a unique combination: a proven reactor, the "stellarator," designed and assembled in modules, integrating a system of superconducting magnets and liquid metal walls. The technologies developed could also be used for other applications in the shorter term.
Our team is made up of world experts in the fields of nuclear fusion, engineering, and the energy sector. We are based near Grenoble, a city renowned for its high-tech research ecosystem.
We are looking for an Analytical Chemist – Process and Materials to ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient management of all chemical materials used and generated in R&D and pilot-scale processes. The role focuses on analytical characterization of incoming and outgoing chemical streams, chemical inventory and management, and the definition of safe frameworks for executing experimental tests involving chemistry, for the development of our processes and their characterization. The Analytical Chemist – Process and Materials supports sustainability, recycling strategies, and chemical safety through close collaboration with Process Engineering teams, and HSE service.
Responsibilities
Chemical Analysis & Characterization
Perform qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses on raw materials, solvents, precursors, and process intermediates.
Analyze exhaust gases, contaminated water, and chemical residues to support process understanding and sustainability.
Develop, validate, and maintain analytical methods such as (GC, GC-MS, FTIR, spectroscopy). (this may be through collaboration with public institutes and through collaboration)
Provide chemical data and interpretation to support R&D and Process Engineering.
Chemical Management, Inventory & Compliance
Manage and maintain the full chemical inventory, ensuring traceability, proper storage, and regulatory compliance.
Interface with HSE service regarding Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical hazards, regulatory obligations, and safe handling procedures.
Classify waste streams, coordinate disposal with external waste-management partners, and ensure compliant documentation.
Support chemical risk assessments, material compatibility evaluations, and identification of critical impurities.
Safe Test Framework & Support to Process Development
Establish safe operating frameworks for temporary chemical test stations (evaporation tests, chemical deposition trials, …)
Ensure safe chemical handling in analytical, characterization, and process-testing laboratories.
Collaborate with R&D and Process Engineers to design and implement sampling methodologies for exhaust gases and other process by-products, enabling effective monitoring, process optimization, and evaluation of recycling or treatment strategies.
Provide chemical expertise for evaluating recycling, recovery, or treatment options for process by-products.
Collaborate with Process Engineers on chemical aspects impacting process stability, safety, and sustainability.
Requirements
Please do not hesitate to apply even if you don't meet all our requirements. Superheroes do not exist - but people with passion and talent do!
Education and professional experience:
PhD or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in an industrial or laboratory environment involving safe handling and management of chemicals (5 years preferred).
Experience with analytical chemistry, chemical process testing, or characterization of chemical precursors and by-products.
Familiarity with thin-film, deposition, or thermochemical processes is a plus.
Prior involvement in process development, scale-up activities, or industrial implementation of chemical workflows is considered an advantage.
Languages
English (C1)
French (B1 or more) is nice to have
Technical skills
Strong knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques (GC, GC-MS, FTIR, chromatography, spectroscopy)
Experience with chemical handling, inventory management, and regulatory compliance (SDS, hazardous materials, waste classification).
Ability to analyze process by-products (gases, effluents, residues) and interpret chemical data to support R&D and process development.
Familiarity with safe laboratory practices, risk assessment, and collaboration with HSE on chemical safety topics.
Problem-solving mindset, strong documentation skills, and ability to work cross-functionally with engineers and researchers.
