Chemical Process Engineer

Renaissance Fusion is a startup aiming to develop and commercialize a nuclear fusion reactor with net electricity production by the 2030s. To achieve this, we rely on a unique combination: a proven reactor, the "stellarator," designed and assembled in modules, integrating a system of superconducting magnets and liquid metal walls. The technologies developed could also be used for other applications in the shorter term.

Our team is made up of world experts in the fields of nuclear fusion, engineering, and the energy sector. We are based near Grenoble, a city renowned for its high-tech research ecosystem.

We are looking for a Process Engineer Industrial to contribute to the design, optimization and safe development and deployment of machines for industrial manufacture of high-temperature thin-film superconductors (HTS).

Responsibilities

• Act as a cross-functional technical reference for process design, chemical handling, and safety aspects across development activities.

• Translate process flow diagrams (PFDs) into piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) in collaboration with the R&D engineers and HSE service.

• Lead HAZOP, FMEA and risk assessment analyses for new processes or plant modifications. Ensure adhere to process safety and regulatory compliance.

• Identify potential operational risks and contribute to the development strategies for waste management, including the treatment of exhaust process gases, wastewater, and chemical waste

• Write and update technical documentation: process descriptions, operating conditions, start-up/shutdown procedures, and control strategies.

• Monitor process parameters (pressure, temperature, flow rate, …) during pilot and scale-up tests. Collaborate with R&D engineers and characterization team to correlate process parameters with product performance.

• Contribute to identifying critical control points and process improvement opportunities by proposing technical solutions.

• Support R&D, pilot plant activities, and scale-up, and contribute to process design and optimization to ensure safety, efficiency, and industrial robustness.

Technical supervision of chemical flows

• Technical management of chemical inventories, ensuring availability, compatibility, and traceability.

• Technical supervision process waste streams (liquid, solid, gaseous) and support HSE service in proper classification and handling

• Identify process issues and propose technical improvements for efficiency, safety, and product quality.

Requirements

Please do not hesitate to apply even if you don't meet all our requirements. Superheroes do not exist - but people with passion and talent do!

Education and professional experience

• PhD or Master’s degree + equivalent experience in chemical engineering or related field

• At least 3, preferably 5 years of experience in an industrial, production environment requiring safe chemical handling

• Experience with thin film processes and proven experience in scale-up and industrialization of chemical processes a plus

Languages

• English (C1)

• French (B1 or more) is nice to have

Technical skills

• In-depth knowledge of industrial equipment operation in chemical environments

• Skills in process optimization to maximize productivity and operational reliability

• Experience in chemical risk management and compliance with HSE regulations

• Awareness of regulatory and environmental requirements in an industrial setting

• Competence in data analysis and performance monitoring for continuous process improvement

• Knowledge of chemical analysis methods: gas analysis, chemical analysis, water analysis is a plus
