About Stand:

Stand is a technology-driven insurance company transforming how homeowners assess, mitigate, and insure against climate risks. We leverage advanced modeling, proactive mitigation strategies, and science-backed assessments to provide coverage in catastrophe-exposed markets where traditional insurers hesitate.

How to apply: Interested applicants can email Stan (stan@standinsurance.com) sharing their resume and a short blurb about their interest in the position.

The Role:

As a Risk Manager at Stand Insurance, you will play a key role in evaluating high-value homes for underwriting, determining necessary mitigation measures, and guiding homeowners through risk reduction strategies. You will assess property vulnerabilities, apply underwriting guidelines, and provide clear, science-based recommendations to improve insurability. Additionally, you will oversee vendor performance to ensure consistency and quality in risk assessments.

This role requires a balance of technical expertise, vendor management, customer engagement, and operational execution to uphold Stand’s risk management standards. Ideal candidates have experience in property risk assessment, vendor oversight, and mitigation strategies—especially in wildfire-prone and catastrophe-exposed regions of California.

Core Responsibilities:

Risk Assessment & Property Evaluation

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments for high-value homes, evaluating structural, fire, and climate-related exposures.

  • Assess home valuation, construction materials, and build quality to support accurate underwriting decisions.

  • Collect and document key data points, including property photos, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data, construction materials, and surrounding fuels.

  • Identify and document hazards such as vegetation, defensible space, and vulnerabilities in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI).

  • Utilize aerial imagery, drone footage, and scientific risk modeling to enhance property evaluations.

Mitigation Determination & Underwriting Compliance

  • Apply Stand’s underwriting guidelines to determine mitigation requirements for policy eligibility.

  • Provide homeowners with clear, actionable steps to meet mitigation requirements and enhance insurability.

  • Ensure mitigation strategies align with scientific risk assessment standards, including defensible space, ember resistance, and structural resilience.

  • Verify the completion of required mitigation measures before policy issuance, coordinating with homeowners and contractors.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of California-specific building codes, regulatory requirements, and best practices for catastrophe-exposed properties.

Vendor Management & Quality Control

  • Oversee third-party inspection vendors to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with Stand’s risk assessment standards.

  • Review vendor inspection reports to ensure alignment with underwriting requirements and mitigation expectations.

  • Provide training and feedback to vendors to enhance data collection and reporting accuracy.

  • Develop and implement performance tracking metrics to assess vendor effectiveness.

  • Collaborate with vendors on process improvements and best practices for risk evaluation.

Homeowner & Broker Engagement

  • Effectively communicate risk assessment findings to homeowners and brokers, outlining necessary mitigation actions.

  • Connect homeowners with Stand’s trusted mitigation vendors and resources for streamlined risk reduction.

  • Advise homeowners on long-term property resilience and best practices for wildfire and climate risk mitigation.

  • Ensure compliance documentation, including receipts and post-mitigation verification photos, is collected and validated.

Operational Execution & Process Optimization

  • Track and report risk assessment results, ensuring data accuracy and efficient underwriting workflows.

  • Collaborate with underwriting and applied science teams to refine risk assessment criteria and decision-making processes.

  • Support the integration of assessment data into underwriting and CFD models, enhancing predictive risk analysis.

Who You Are:

  • A detail-oriented professional with experience in property risk assessment, underwriting, or insurance inspections.

  • Skilled in evaluating wildfire, structural, and climate-related property risks, especially in California’s catastrophe-exposed areas.

  • Experienced in vendor oversight, field inspections, or risk mitigation strategies.

  • Strong communicator, capable of explaining risk concepts and mitigation steps to homeowners and brokers.

  • Comfortable leveraging technology, aerial imagery, and risk modeling tools to enhance property assessments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in property risk management, underwriting, insurance inspections, or a related field.

  • Knowledge of California building codes, wildfire mitigation best practices, and regulatory requirements.

  • Experience working with third-party vendors, inspectors, or mitigation contractors.

  • Familiarity with drone technology, aerial imagery, and advanced risk modeling tools is a plus.
