Why Join Stand: At Stand, you’ll help build a new class of global property protection. We use advanced physics and AI to model catastrophic risk at the asset level, then automate underwriting and mitigation before loss occurs. Insurance is simply the current delivery mechanism. The real product is a scalable risk engine.
We stay when traditional insurers exit. We model what others approximate. And we build systems that change outcomes, not just prices.
Background: The property insurance industry is built to price loss after it happens. It relies on coarse proxies, backward-looking data, and manual processes, then accepts damage as unavoidable.
Stand takes a different approach. We simulate how real-world catastrophes affect individual properties, translate that into actionable decisions, and automate the business around it. The result is a platform that can underwrite what others can’t and operate with far less friction.
What We're Building
Stand is reimagining high-net-worth personal lines insurance for a world where the old playbook doesn't work anymore. Climate risk is escalating, client expectations are rising, and legacy carriers are retreating or stuck in out-dated workflows. We're building the carrier that actually solves hard problems—combining deep underwriting judgment with modern technology to protect what matters most to our clients.
This isn't about moving paper faster. It's about being the underwriter brokers want to work with on their toughest risks, the one who asks better questions, finds creative solutions, and builds a book that's both profitable and resilient.
The Role
You'll be executing our underwriting strategy for a high-net-worth personal lines book—complex homes, unique exposures, CAT risks that make other carriers nervous. You'll work directly with brokers and our marketing, mitigation, and engineering teams to evaluate risks others won't touch, structure creative terms, and deliver an experience that makes us the easiest carrier to work with
This is hands-on underwriting with real autonomy. You'll own your book, make decisive calls on complex submissions, and help shape how we leverage technology to get better at the craft without losing the human judgment that matters.
What You'll Own
Become the underwriter brokers call when they have a challenge—CAT-exposed properties, unique collections, non-standard liability exposures. Develop creative, solution-oriented approaches that balance client needs with sound risk selection, and share your wins and tough calls with the team so we all get sharper.
Grow your assigned book to premium and policy targets while maintaining strict risk quality standards. Demonstrate improved selection through thoughtful terms, appropriate pricing, and knowing when to walk away. Keep underwriting files audit-ready with clear documentation and rationale.
Cut quote-to-bind time, especially on complex risks, through decisive communication and clear workflows. Earn top-tier broker satisfaction by being more responsive and easier to work with than any other carrier they use. Hit a 22%+ bind-to-quote ratio by being the underwriter who finds solutions.
Adopt and help refine our underwriting tools and platforms. Identify repeatable tasks that should be systematized so you can focus on what requires judgment, and push us to continuously improve how we evaluate, price, and service risks.
What Makes You Great at This
You're deeply curious about people, assets, and emerging risks—you ask the pertinent questions about lifestyle, property features, liability exposures, and what might evolve in the future.
You're creative in solving non-standard risks with bespoke terms and layered structures without sacrificing profitability, and you know when to look for solutions versus when to walk away.
You're broker-obsessed, communicating clearly and explaining the "why" behind your decisions while holding the line on terms when needed.
You're tech-inclined and naturally ask "Can we systematize this?" when you see repeatable tasks.
Most importantly, you execute with ownership—you eschew "we can't" or "I'll have to refer this," make timely decisions on complex submissions, and your follow-through is a hallmark.
What You Bring
5+ years of underwriting experience in personal lines, preferably HNW or complex property risks
Strong understanding of property valuations and liability exposures
Track record of managing a profitable book while delivering excellent broker service
Comfort with technology and willingness to adapt to new platforms and tools
CPCU, AU, or similar designation (or in progress) preferred
What Doesn't Work Here
We're building something different, so there are some traits that won't fit: low curiosity or a "just tell me what to do" mentality; rigid adherence to "how it's always been done"; reluctance to engage with brokers, clients, or cross-functional partners; prioritizing personal wins over team outcomes; or bringing workplace drama that undermines trust.
Our Tenets
Pace with Purpose — We move fast, but never recklessly. Speed matters when brokers are waiting on quotes and clients need coverage, but we don't sacrifice sound judgment for velocity.
Own the Outcome — You own your book and your decisions. No passing the buck, no ambiguity about who's accountable. When something goes sideways, we fix it.
Constructive Conflict — We debate ideas openly and push each other to be better. The best underwriting happens when we challenge assumptions and pressure-test our thinking, not when we nod along to be polite.
